Software I choose to use
These are the best tools I have found for me to be able to get things done (most of them also happen to cost nothing). I choose software based on functionality and stability over whether it is open or closed source.
Linux
- Aterm - an xterm with decent configuration options.
- Firefox - awesome web browser, very stable, feature rich and fast.
- The Gimp - the only graphics prog to rival Photoshop.
- Open Office - a well rounded office suite.
- Pidgen - instant messenger client that works with all the major protocols.
- Rhythmbox - after xmms died out this is now my music player / manager.
- Skype - the IM / VOIP client we use at work, runs fine under Linux.
- Thunderbird - ok email client switched to because Sylpheed didn't work on a Mac.
- Vim - the text editor, I hope to master it before I die.
- X-Chat - IRC client with scripting support.
- XFCE4 - became my window manager of choice after fluxbox let me down.
Win32
- Counter Strike - still playing it.
- Dawn of War - best game since XCOM.
Mac OSX - used for a year as an experiment
- Vim - same as Linux.
- Microsoft Office - I have found Word has better collaboration tools than Open Office.
- Thunderbird - I wished Sylpheed had a native port for the Mac, Thunderbird didn't annoyed me though.
- Firefox - same as Linux.
- iTerm - for me it is the Aterm of Mac terminal emulators.
- Eclipse - same as Linux.
- iTunes - works well as a music player / manager.
- Photoshop - native on the Mac, means I don't need to run any kind of Wine based solution.
- Adium - an excellent multi-protocol IM client for Mac.
- VLC - plays more media than iTunes can by default.
- Skype - same as Linux.
- X-Chat - same as Linux.
